GKD Media Mesh

The Port Authority Bus Terminal is awash in graphics and light thanks to the 6,000 square foot stainless steel Mediamesh fabric that wraps its way around the corner of 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. More than 1.325 million LED diodes are interwoven throughout the stainless steel fabric to allow the imagery to come alive from seemingly nowhere. The transparent media façade is extremely energy efficient in operation while providing for sun shading and air flow as additional benefits.

Henry Madden Library, CSU

Henry Madden Library includes a video installation by the artist and architect Susan Narduli. The installation shows a basket weaver at work during the course of 12 months. From this material, a motion picture was created that shows the complete process of creating a basket from start to finish in real time, running over a two-week period—making this undoubtedly one of the longest art films ever made.

The large media façade is mounted in the interior of the building behind a large glass façade with its brilliance radiating outwards onto the planned “Peace Garden”. Students and visitors walking past the garden or the library will thus be able to view the basket creation process.

American Airlines Arena

Miami’s American Airlines Arena is home not only to 2006 NBA Champion Miami HEAT, but also to the first major installation of Mediamesh in the United States. GKD and American Airlines recently unveiled the first-of-its-kind energy-efficient digital media façade which has transformed downtown Miami into what’s being called “Times Square South.” Blending seamlessly with the arena architecture, Mediamesh—with its stainless steel and embedded LEDs—covers the Arena’s west face, making it the largest digital LED display in the Southeast region of the United States.
